Medium Chain Triglycerides
Medium Chain Triglycerides(MCT) are a class of fats synthesised from medium-chain fatty acids (C8-C10) with glycerol. In feed, MCT can be added in the form of liquid MCT or microencapsulated into MCT powder, which has good water solubility and dispersibility, and is easy to store and add, has been widely used in the field of animal feed.
Mechanism of action
MCT is rapidly digested and metabolised and becomes an efficient source of energy.MCT has a low dependence on bile salts and pancreatic enzymes and is easily hydrolysed in the intestine at a rate six times that of LCT, with the fastest hydrolysis occurring in 3 hours and all hydrolysis occurring in 10 hours. It is absorbed in the duodenum as glycerol and MCFA. It is absorbed in the duodenum in the form of glycerol and MCFA, which binds to clear protein and is directly transported to the liver through the portal vein, resulting in rapid energy production. At the same time, MCFA can directly enter the mitochondria of hepatocytes for rapid and complete oxidation, and its oxidative metabolism and conversion rate in the liver is almost the same as that of glucose and is not easy to accumulate in adipose tissue and liver tissue.
In the absence of pancreatic lipase or bile salts, MCFA can still be absorbed, whereas long-chain fatty acids cannot be absorbed in this situation. This feature is important in young and sick animals (where pancreatic lipase and bile salts are not secreted in sufficient quantities).
